Lord Of the Flies
Chapter 13
Unexpected Discovery
Ralph’s eyes turned from hazel pools of sorrow and grief to uncontrollable, heart-wrenching agony. The sticky, fishy sand looked like stipplings of salt and pepper collected around his steaming, soiled body. At this point, Ralph felt the pain. The pain that he could not display before. The pain of fresh scars striped on his ribs, the pain of the terrible lose of his true friends Piggy and Simon and the pain of nearly close to death matters. The officer’s expressionless eyes scan each painted face in a couple choppy seconds. He turns to the soldiers behind and drew in a deep huff.
“ Men! Make a critical, yet swift search around the island to check if there are others-“
Ralph lifted; the mud that was tainted around his puffy red eyes and bloodshot cheeks had turned into pearly black traces down his chin and dripping to his neck.
“ There are no others. But-“ Ralph thought a moment, then cleared his throat sharply, then winced and swallowed. “ Unless…” He turned to the Savages, staring off into space, standing limp with swaying, bruised legs. Ralph turned back to the officer. “ There was a boy. Forgot his name. He was…small. A littlun. He had this, mulberry colored birthmark on one of his cheeks. He… told us that he had nightmares. Nightmares about a beastie. Well…” Ralph looked down, sealing his eyes shut to prevent the tears. “ One night we made a fire, and, and it got out of control, and spread everywhere!” Ralph’s head shot up and he threw his arms wide and out-stretched, then brought them back in. “That night, we never saw the boy again.”
The Navel officer’s nostrils flared. “ Men!” He turned again to the remaining soldiers standing with guns and camouflage suits near the boats. “ Lets get these boys in the boats ASAP! And immediate medical attention is required.”
Ralph got up. Obviously exhausted. He stood tall, a few inches shorter then the Navel Officer. Leafs and trigs stuck out of his curly sun-browned hair. The last time he remembered, he was near a foot shorter. And Jack, he stood towering over all of the Savages, including a few Navel Officers. Ralph walked over to the ship; his chest was out, and he marched without silliness to boat. Jack was the first to walk as he strolled to the boat. Same attitude as Ralph. When all of the kids were loaded in, there was eerie silence. It was strange for the boys because they had been on the Island for so long that sense they lost all of their saneness it was bizarre to them that they actually followed some rules. That they actually obeyed. On their trip back to the scary reality of the adult-world all of the savages sat beside one-other, far from Jack and Ralph. And that made Jack abashed at two things. One, all of the Savages that were his Hunters had disconnected themselves from his power, probably thinking to them selves; “ I don’t want to be seen with a boy like Jack. I’ll be in enough trouble when I get back.” And two because he was alone, with the power gone fast like sugar dissolving in water. Ralph and Jack sat the farthest from one-another. Jacks face red, so red his freckles disappeared. He glared out the section of the sky, with his golden eyebrows pulled together and his fists clenched with force; so much force his knucles turned white. Ralph sat, calmer then Jack, yet with the mask glowing with wrath. Ralph internally didn’t feel this way, but because Jack kept a hard look, Ralph still didn’t want to perceive softened or defeated in any visible way.
When the boys awoken from there heavy sleep on the boat, it was dark. The sky was a navy blue with gray fog curling above the platforms. When Ralph soon woke up, he immediately new it was morning. Because the grass was stippled with dew that looked like crystals, and the heaviness of the chill fog, and the way the navy blue sky gradually turned into a gradient orange glow at the bottom. They were in England. A few of the boys seemed self-continuos as they walked passed the passing Sane English People. Ralph and Jack, still no eyes contact.
Later on in the months that followed, this is what ended up happening: For a few of the littluns, it was more complex unfolding there true identity and there family, and sadly especially for Percivil Wemdsy Madison, Telephone, Telephone, Telephone…
As for the biguns they made it back safely, but with hurt hearts. Guilt and blame had stuck them more then anything that’s happened to them senses the Island. Ralph well, Ralph went back to his normal life, he was also asked to speak in broad audiences on his great experiences and he also spoke to though longer with lack of understanding. As for Jack well, he was sentenced to Juvenile hall, responsible for Simon and Piggy's death, and when he got out a few years later something remarkable happened.
It all started in the fall of October 19th, 1948. Ralph had attended a new school. On his first day, he walked around the field, with a new uniform and a new look. Girls and boys play around, jumping in the maple leaves, and turning cartwheels. Then Suddenly Ralph glanced up, just out of his natural-reflexes, and saw a really clear familiar face standing, staring back in the distance, almost shielded by the large sugar maple trees. What looked out of that face, were a pair of pale blue eyes that looked like windows cut in almond-shapes. The boy in the distance had fair skin and I tall stature. Jack, smiled a crooked smile, and his luminous teeth gleamed. Ralph smiled back, with the intention of a new friend ship.
